For eligibility to attain the Chartered status, you have to be an Engineers Australia member. Besides that, you must have five years or more of engineering work experience.

You will be required to fulfill and maintain competency across 16 elements that are related to your occupation category and engineering discipline. The 16 elements you have to maintain sit across four core areas that are below:

  • Obligation to community
  • Personal commitment
  • Technical proficiency

If having work experience for more than 15 years, your application process is more streamlined.

If you have a Chartered grade from overseas, you may be able to apply via a mutual recognition agreement. For that, you will be required to offer proof of a minimum of 150 hours of CPD over the previous three years.

Steps for chartership:

  1. The first thing you need to do is to become an EA member. Applying for chartership needs you to be a member.
  2. Make your CPD (continuing professional development) portfolio. You must keep track of your CPD in the Engineers Australia portal account. CPD can be formal training, events, safety training, discussions, networking and site inductions. Complete a minimum of 150 hours of CPD over a three-year period to apply for and maintain your Chartered Engineer Australia
  3. Begin keeping proof of where you have used the 16 elements of competency for independent practice (Stage 2) in your role. These can be presentations, emails, development plans, project plans, drawings, plans and peer review reports.

Finally, you must attend one of the Chartered information sessions to know more.

  1. This step is for graduate members only. You should find a member through Engineers Australia’s exclusive graduate mentor match program. It is a six-month structured program that is exclusive to graduate members. This program will pair you with an experienced engineer in your engineering field who can mentor you. To know more about this, you should email Engineers Australia.
