PHILADELPHIA Kyle Schwarber had an impressive week, both on and off the field.
The Phillies slugger made headlines with his power at the plate, hitting three home runs in Toronto on September 3, including a pivotal three-run homer in the ninth inning that helped the Phillies edge out the Blue Jays 10-9. He followed that with a leadoff home run on September 4, contributing to a 4-2 win over Toronto, tying Alfonso Soriano for the most leadoff homers in a single season in MLB history. Later in the week, Schwarber hit another home run in a dominant 16-2 victory over the Marlins. His bat stayed hot, and by Tuesday, his 437-foot blast to center field set a new record for the most leadoff homers in a season, with 14.
These feats earned Schwarber the title of NL Player of the Week and recognition as the Phillies nominee for the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award. This prestigious award honors players who have made significant contributions to their communities.
Schwarbers charitable efforts are deeply personal. In 2017, he launched Schwarber's Neighborhood Heroes Jean Cabrera Jersey, a program designed to give back to first responders and their families. The initiative raises funds to support wellness, education, and crisis services for these families, having raised over $1 million since its creation with more than $600, 000 of that raised since he joined the Phillies in 2022.
"Its something thats really close to my heart, " Schwarber shared. His father, Greg, was a police officer and police chief in their hometown of Middletown, Ohio. His mother, Donna, worked as a police dispatcher before becoming a nurse, and his sister, Lindsey, served in the Army National Guard before becoming a police officer.
Schwarber credits his familys background with shaping his own values. "Thats why I wanted to start this charity to honor them and the challenges first responders face daily, " he explained. "Its important to highlight the positive contributions these individuals make, both on the job and in their communities."
If baseball hadnt been his career path, Schwarber said he would likely have followed in his familys footsteps and become a first responder himself. "Everyone sees us as baseball players, but this is Philadelphia Max Kepler Jersey, where my kids are growing up. I want to make a difference in the community, not just through my baseball career but by showing people who I am off the field and what I care about."
Recently, Kyle and his wife, Paige, hosted the Schwarber Block Party, which raised over $300, 000 to support first responder families, further cementing his legacy as someone who embodies the spirit of the Roberto Clemente Award, both on and off the field.
