Spandex, also known by its generic name lycra, is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. The development of spandex can be traced back to 1930 when DuPont scientist Sidney Jacobson began experimenting with polymers made of polyurethane.
While efforts were underway to develop Spandex commercially, companies recognized its potential for activewear and swimsuits where stretch and shape retention were important. In 1959, g swimwear manufacturer Cole of California began using spandex in bikinis and leotards. That same year, dancer Gale Sayers wore a spandex leotard during a telecast, exposing American audiences to the new wonder fabric on primetime television.
