Sodium sulfide (Na2S) is an inorganic compound composed of sodium, sodium ions (Na+), and sulfide ions (S2-). It is a white crystalline solid that is highly soluble in water.

Sodium sulfide (Na2S) is an inorganic compound that consists of sodium, sulfur and sometimes water molecules. It exists as a yellow to colorless solid, or as a white crystalline powder. It has an odor similar to rotten eggs due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide. Sodium sulfide is highly soluble in water to form an alkaline solution which is used in many industrial applications.

Chemical Properties of Sodium Sulfide

Sodium Sulfide has the chemical formula Na2S. When dissolved in water, it forms sodium hydrosulfide (NaSH) and hydroxide (NaOH) ions. It reacts readily with acids to produce hydrogen sulfide gas which is toxic and flammable. Sodium sulfide is a basic salt due to the presence of sulfide (S2-) and hydroxide (OH-) ions.

It has a melting point of approximately 873°C and when heated strongly decomposes to produce sulfur and sodium. It is hygroscopic in nature, meaning it readily absorbs moisture from air. Sodium sulfide solutions are also mildly corrosive due to their high alkalinity. Proper protective equipment must be used when handling sodium sulfide in any form.
