Since the invention of the first wristwatch back in 1810 we have seen the watch market evolve constantly. But perhaps the most spectacular jump was the one that took us from analog watches to digital watches.
If you want to know more about this type of watches, keep reading. We explain what a digital clock is and how it works.
What is a digital clock
The definition of a digital watch is simple: It is a watch, usually electronic, that shows the time in the form of numbers, instead of using hands.
In general, these types of watches work with batteries, which means that they have to be changed from time to time. The exact time depends on the brand of watch purchased and the brand of battery.
How do they work?
The inner workings of a digital watch can be broken down into these 3 main components:
- Power source
- Timing mechanism
- Digital screen
The power source of a Swiss Watch Factory digital watch is electrical and can be from a battery or alternating current. This depends on the watch itself and each has its own advantages and disadvantages. In the case of a current powered digital clock, it is mainly used for wall clocks. By comparison, the battery-powered watch will need periodic battery replacement. Due to its limited electrical charge, it is also limited to smaller watches.
All digital watches use an electronic timekeeping mechanism using an integrated circuit/microchip inside. Oscillators are the heart of any watch because they are the timing mechanism that tells the watch what the definition of "1 second" is. From there, the watch does its job incrementing its counter to count minutes, hours, days, etc.
The most common oscillator is the quartz crystal oscillator. Inside the watch is a very small quartz crystal (or just a grain of sand/silica) that is shaped like a tuning fork. Quartz is a piezoelectric material that vibrates when electricity from the battery passes through it. This vibration is detected as a signal and is divided until it equals 1 signal per second. The final signal from the timing mechanism is transferred to the display to show the time.
There are 3 main types of digital display: mechanical-digital display, 7-segment digital display, and modern digital display.
Is a digital or analog watch better?
Today we see more and more futuristic digital watches at Luxury Watches Factory, but there are many people who still prefer analog watches.
Is a digital watch better than an analog one? The answer varies depending on who you ask. When it comes to precision and functionalities, digital watches win (although there are traditional watch movements that offer enormous accuracy).
However, if we move to the field of aesthetics, things change and supporters of analog watches win by a majority. Analog watches are not only much more aesthetic on their own, but often fit much better with any outfit. This is the most important factor for most people and the main reason why analog watches are still used today.
And it is that without a doubt the classic watches have an aura of elegance and style that at the moment the digital ones have not been able to match. If you are also a fan of classic watches, and even better if they have a good story behind them, you are in the right place. Luxury Watches Manufacturer has watches from the best custom quality, all at the best prices.
