Bahraich Violence: Two Accused Injured in Police Encounter Near Nepal Border

Two suspects were injured in a police encounter near Nepal border following Bahraich violence during a Durga Puja procession.

On Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh Police arrested five suspects involved in the recent communal violence in Bahraich. The arrests occurred following an encounter in which two of the suspects, Mohammad Sarfaraz and Mohammad Talib, were injured. The encounter took place near the Nepal border as the police attempted to apprehend the accused.

Bahraich Accused Shot in Encounter

Sarfaraz and Talib, both sons of Abdul Hamid (who had been arrested earlier), suffered gunshot wounds. According to the police, one was shot in the right leg, while the other sustained a bullet injury in the left leg. Authorities revealed that Sarfaraz was attempting to flee to Nepal after his involvement in the crime.

The violence in Bahraich broke out during a Durga Puja idol immersion procession on Sunday, leading to the death of a 22-year-old man, Ram Gopal Mishra, who was shot during the clashes. Along with Mishra’s death, six others were injured due to stone-pelting and gunfire. The police have since registered several First Information Reports (FIRs) against those involved, both identified and unidentified.

Bahraich Superintendent of Police, Vrinda Shukla, confirmed the encounter, stating that the injured suspects had been taken into custody and are receiving medical attention. She emphasized that the police are working hard to apprehend all those involved in the violence.

On Wednesday, the police arrested another suspect, Danish, also known as Raja or Sahir, from Rajee Chauraha. Danish was the fourth individual named in the case and was apprehended while trying to escape to Nepal. In total, 55 suspects have been arrested so far as the police continue their raids.

The violence led to widespread destruction, with mobs setting fire to homes, shops, showrooms, hospitals, and vehicles. The situation in Bahraich remains tense as investigations continue.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met with the family of the deceased, Ram Gopal Mishra. He assured them of justice and promised support for the family. The post-mortem report indicated that Mishra died due to shock and excessive blood loss, with 25 to 30 pellets found in his body along with other injuries.
