Over the past few decades, Protein Modification has given rise to many important medical and industrial products.

Early Developments in Directed Evolution
Some of the earliest work in Protein Engineering Modification utilized methods of directed evolution. Directed evolution involves subjecting a population of proteins to environmental pressures that select for desired functions. Through multiple rounds of mutation and selection, proteins are evolved to acquire new capabilities.

 

In the 1980s and 1990s, scientists used directed evolution to produce enzymes with enhanced properties for detergents and other industrial applications. These early successes demonstrated how evolution could be harnessed to tailor protein functions outside of nature.
