Outdoor furniture is a fantastic home accessory. Designed to make outside spaces more livable and comfortable, Plastic Rattan Set brings the luxury and relaxation of the indoors outside. Like all things within the home, though, outdoor furniture requires some maintenance, and you’ll get more life out of your chaise lounges, outdoor sectionals, and dining sets if you care for them appropriately.

Here’s everything you need to know to keep your outdoor furniture beautiful and resilient, the whole year through.

Remove cushions or other fabric seat covers; clean these separately according to the care tags. Let them dry completely before them putting back on furniture.

Prepare your furniture

Make sure you remove any cushions that come with your furniture. There's a separate blog post on how to clean those - coming soon. You should also move your furniture into an open area of the garden or on the drive, where it doesn't matter if you make a bit of a splash!

Clean Away Stains

If there is a food stain, drink spill, or muddy paw prints on rattan, they should be cleaned away as soon as possible. Do not try to rub away these stains because that will push the matter deeper into the woven fibers.

If there are solids involved, use a spoon or dull knife to lift them away from the rattan. Once the solids are removed, use a damp microfiber cloth to wipe down the area and allow the rattan to air-dry.

Use a toothbrush to help loosen solids or other stains that have dried onto the rattan. Then, dampen a microfiber cloth and put just a drop of dishwashing liquid on the cloth. Wipe down the stained area. Follow up with a cloth dampened with fresh water and allow the area to air-dry.

Start cleaning!

Now, you can mix a small measurement of the washing up liquid to a bucket of warm water. With this soapy water, you can use the soft cloth to apply the solution all over the surfaces of your furniture. Be sure you don't miss any hidden or awkward spots! Allow the furniture to soak for a few minutes.

Rinse away the suds

Next, it's time to rinse off the soapy liquid. Use your garden hose (if you've got access to one) to wash away all of the suds. Make sure you keep your hose at one of the lower, more gentle settings so you don't put too much pressure on the furniture. If you've not got access to a hose, you'll have to pour over buckets of cold water until all the soapiness has been rinsed away.

Clean the furniture regularly

Outdoor furniture is exposed to dirt, dust, and the wind, all of which can cause grime buildup that slowly degrades the integrity of the materials. To prevent this from happening, clean your furniture regularly.

Some materials, like plastic, can just be wiped down and hosed off, while higher-quality materials, such as wicker and rattan, will need to be scrubbed carefully with a fine-bristle brush to remove buildup.

While outdoor furniture maintenance may seem like a pain, it’s the best way to keep your furniture investments clean and beautiful for years to come.
