At the top of every wind turbine tower sits an enclosure known as the nacelle. Weighing tens of tons, the nacelle houses all the key components that work together to convert wind energy into usable electricity. But what exactly is inside this complex mechanical room high above the ground?

The Drive Train: Gears, Shafts and Generators

An important system located within the Wind Turbine Nacelle is the drive train. It consists of a shaft, gearbox, coupling and generator. As wind spins the three turbine blades attached to the front of the nacelle, the shaft connected to the hub begins to rotate. This kinetic motion is transferred via the drive train to the generator where it is converted to electricity.

At the beginning of the drive train is the main shaft. Connected to the hub, it spins along with the rotating blades, transmitting rotational energy. However, the shaft spins relatively slowly compared to the high-speed rotation needed by the generator to produce electricity. This is where the gearbox comes in.
