What is MBBS?
The acronym MBBS stands for Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery. In other words, an MBBS is a professional degree in medical science that enables doctors to perform surgeries, identify and diagnose diseases and ailments, and prescribe medications. Students who aspire to become doctors and positively touch human lives should pursue MBBS after their 12th standard exams. This course lasts 5.5 years, including 1 year of compulsory internship.
MBBS Entrance Exam in India
You can secure admission to MBBS in India through the entrance examinations of NEET (National Eligibility Cumulative Entrance Examination). To qualify to appear in NEET, students must have Physics, Chemistry, and Biology as their main subjects in classes 11 and 12. This entrance exam is regulated by the Indian Government and is conducted by the NMC (National Medical Commission), previously known as IMC (Indian Medical Council). Candidates should be a minimum of 17 years of age and a maximum of 25 years to appear in the NEET examination for entrance to MBBS in India.
MBBS Programme in India
MBBS in India is 5.5 years, including 1 year of mandatory internship.
The following subjects are covered during the MBBS programme:
- Semesters 1 and 2: Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry
- Semesters 3-5: Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Clinical postings in Wards, OPD
- Semesters 6-9: Community Medicine, Medicine, and allied subjects, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Pediatrics, Surgery and allied subjects, Clinical postings
